| Just as learning a second language promotes a better
understanding of one's native language, knowing another culture contributes
to a better understanding of one's own culture. As we observe the role
a foreign culture plays in shaping its members' actions, beliefs and
judgements, we can better understand how our own culture influences
our attitudes and values. Appreciation of cultural diversity is indeed
one of the joys of day-to-day living in a foreign country. It helps
us discard the preconceived beliefs and stereotypes that often influence
our perception of members of other cultures. Personal relationships,
verbal interaction, non-verbal communication, family values, work values,
social etiquette, time perception, leisure activities, ethic and aesthetic
viewpoints, all offer challenging opportunities for discovery. |
