PROGRAM FOR TEENAGERS

All students under 18 years of age coming in July and August must enroll in the Special Program for Teenagers.

This program covers Spanish for everyday use. It emphasizes oral proficiency and provides a solid foundation of the language. It is intended for those teenagers who will be traveling by themselves, with a friend or sibling, etc. (without a pre-formed group). They will be placed with a specially selected Costa Rican family with teenage sons or daughters. Most host families have been collaborating with the Institute for several years and have hosted students numerous times. Participants are closely supervised by the Institute and also by the host families. They must abide by the same rules imposed by each family on their own children, and have to comply with an 8:00 P.M. curfew unless accompanied by a host family member. The program includes cultural and sports activities and several guided visits in our private bus to many of the sites and natural treasures that make Costa Rica unique. Chaperons are professional, trained to work with Spanish students. They continually encourage the learning and practice of the language.

Schedules:

Classes are held Monday through Friday in the afternoons from 1:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Mornings are reserved for activities. Saturdays include sports activities, a one day trip to the beach and a visit to an amusement park. Sundays are normally spent with the host families. If students wish to participate by themselves on weekend excursions, the Institute needs to receive parental permission.

Parental authorization:

Although the institute strongly recommends that teenage students comply with the curfew for safety reasons, many insist on extending it, and parents often agree. Therefore, the institute needs to receive an authorization form signed by a parent for the student. It will be provided by the school.
